Since it's inception in the late-1920s, Cranbrook Academy of Art has been international in nature. At first many of the Artists-in-Residence held passports adorned with the flags and crests of various European nations. Quickly, However, students from around the world discovered Cranbrook and recognized it as a place that would provide them with the high-caliber, studio-based art education that they sought.
This exhibition presents a slice of CranbrookÕs international character, presenting the work of forty-three of its alumni who have ties to the Republic of Korea (South Korea). 6595 MILES (10614 KM) is the distance between Seoul, Korea, and Bloomfield Hills, Michigan. While this is an impressive distance, more important is the fact that for many decades Korean Nationals have studied at Cranbrook, in significant numbers. These students came and continue to arrive in order to learn and to grow as individual artists, but they also help to make Cranbrook a broader place and a more enriched environment, both culturally and historically.
We trust that the special relationship that exists between Cranbrook Academy of Art and the Republic of Korea is one that will continue to be nourished by artists and educators on both continents; perhaps this will decrease the number of miles (or kilometers) between us. We all benefit from the exchange.
