Cranbrook Art Museum Summer Camps
July 13 – August 14, 2015
Cranbrook Art Museum offers art-intensive summer camps and workshops to students entering grades one through nine. Teaching artists guide students as they create and explore art, architecture, and design using Cranbrook's amazing collections!
All art supplies and materials are included with camp registration. Limited need-based scholarships are available; contact us for more information.
Design your dream house! Get inspired by architectural drawings and models in the Museum's vaults. Tour two historic homes: the Saarinen House, located on Cranbrook's campus, and the Smith House, designed by Frank Lloyd Wright. Create floor plans, elevations, sections, and a model of the house of your dreams. $20 additional field trip fee for Smith House.
COSTUMES & CHARACTERS
Create wild costumes, character puppets, and amazing masks. Draw inspiration from the elaborate costumes in Here Hear, an exhibition of artwork by internationally renowned artist Nick Cave. Using photographs of your costume, puppet, or mask, create an animated GIF of one of your characters. Participate in a costume parade celebrating your amazing artwork.
ART WITH PAPER
Explore the endless possibilities of art with paper! Let your creativity run wild with origami, paper cutting, and weaving methods as you discover the potential of paper. Make paper from pulp and create papier-mâché sculptures. Create prints with photosensitive paper. Of course, you'll paint and draw on paper too!
MY ART MUSEUM
Design your own museum! From the architecture to the artwork, you'll make it all. Select a theme for your museum, then create paintings, sculptures, and more to install in the architectural model you construct. Investigate art and architecture at Cranbrook as you create your own work. Artist, architect, and curator-this is your chance to do it all!
PROBLEM SOLVING BY DESIGN
Designers tinker, investigate, sketch, and make! From chairs to cars, designers make objects all around us, solving problems beautifully. Identify design problems and create your own 2D and 3D design solutions for furniture, toys, and more- with inspiration from famous designers including Charles and Ray Eames, Florence Knoll, and George Nelson.
*TEEN WORKSHOPS (Entering Grades 7-9)
Enjoy an open-ended studio approach, where teens have more time to explore their own interests within each camp theme. Teaching artists will do demonstrations, provide direction, and critique student work, while supporting individual interests. Students will use the Cranbrook Academy of Art Library to explore topics.
