Graduate Degree Exhibition
April 22 - May 11, 2007
ArtMembers’ Opening
Saturday, April 21, 6–8pm
Cranbrook Academy of Art is an internationally recognized school of
art, design and architecture comprised of a community of working artists
and students. Established in 1932, the Academy of Art’s
Graduate Program remains a "living studio of artistic invention"
as envisioned by its founder, newspaper publisher and philanthropist
George Booth.
The prestigious two-year Graduate Program includes approximately 150
students working with ten Artists-in-Residence, each of whom heads one
of the Academy’s ten departments: Architecture,
Ceramics,
2D
Design, 3D
Design,
Fiber,
Metalsmithing,
Painting,
Photography,
Print
Media, and Sculpture. Each
April, as part of the requirements for earning either a Master of Fine
Arts or Master of Architecture degree, the second-year Master’s
degree candidates present their thesis work in the annual Graduate Degree
Exhibition.

It is difficult to imagine the story of design and art in America without
Cranbrook Academy of Art -- a vital community of artists in Bloomfield
Hills, Michigan, whose faculty and students have encompassed world famous
architects, sculptors, weavers, ceramists, metalworkers and painters.
These include the prominent architects Eliel and Eero Saarinen; the
furniture and interior designers Florence Knoll and Charles and Ray
Eames; designer of fine silverware and sculptor Harry Bertoia; ceramist
Maija Grotell; designers Loja Saarinen and her daughter, Pipsan Saarinen
Swanson; sculptors Carl Milles and Duane Hanson; and painter Zoltan
Sepeshy, among others. There is hardly an art or craft, in America or
abroad, that has not been influenced directly or indirectly by the Cranbrook
Academy of Art. In fact Cranbrook has been called America’s democratic
counterpart to the great German school, the Bauhaus.
NOTE:
The Art Museum galleries will be closed April 2 through April 20 during
the installation of the 2007 Graduate Degree
Exhibition. The Store, however, will remain open and is offering
a special 20% discount for ArtMembers (10% for the general public) on
most gift items and books during the installation period.
