UPPER LEFT continues a series of Network Gallery projects aimed at highlighting the current work of Academy graduates living in different regions of the country. The first exhibition in this series, 718: A Bridge to Brooklyn, took place in the fall of 2002. UPPER LEFT presents the work of twenty alumni -- artists, architects and designers -- from Washington State who represent six decades of Academy graduates. This body of work first was shown in February of 2004 at Gulassa & Co., an alternative gallery space in Seattle, where the exhibition coincided with the annual College Art Association conference.
Our notions of the Pacific Northwest typically evoke visions of nature and its inherent appeal to our senses. Greens, blues, grays, rain, growth, life. To what extent does place affect an artist? As one explores this exhibition, references to WashingtonÕs natural environment are evident in the artistsÕ choices of subject matter, media, texture and color. Ultimately, however, the influence of location is something that is known, either consciously or subconsciously, only by the artist, and something to be speculated upon by you the viewer. So, take a deep breadth, sharpen your senses and enjoy your trip through the upper left and her artists!
