Tour Season May Through October Information: 248-645-3361 Saarinen
House and GardenCompleted in 1930, the Art Deco-style Saarinen House served as the home and studio of Finnish-American architect Eliel Saarinen, Cranbrook's resident architect from 1925 to 1950, and his wife Loja Saarinen, head of Studio Loja Saarinen and the Academy's department of weaving. Tours begin at the Art Museum front desk at 1 pm on Thursday-Friday and at 1 pm and 3 pm on Saturday-Sunday. Walk-in tours do not require reservations. A twilight tour is offered at 6:30 pm on the fourth Friday of the month. Private tours are available with advance reservations only. The Saarinen House Summer 2007 Tour Season is sponsored by Huntington Cleaners & Shirt Laundry. Myths and Legends Told in the Language of Sculpture Gods and heroes from Greek mythology and Scandinavian lore come to life in this lively outdoor tour of the museum grounds. The tour can be customized for children and students of all ages, from Kindergarten through high school. Two-week advance reservations are required for this tour. Parents with children are welcome to try a self-guided Sculpture Scavenger Hunt, which is available at the Art Museum front desk. Cranbrook Campus Architecture and Sculpture Walks Learn about Cranbrook's evolution during the past 100 years and see its celebrated architecture and unique sculpture. This walking tour begins at Cranbrook Art Museum and follows a path through the Cranbrook campus. The length of the tour varies from 90 minutes to 4 hours. Two-week advance reservations are required for this tour. |
